The Graduate Research School deals with enquiries about research-led postgraduate study at eca. Formal applications for postgraduate study must be submitted to the Academic Registry.
The focus of my architectural, planning and urban design practice (1980-87) and my later research interest at the University of Liverpool was in the field of user-controlled community technical aid. In Liverpool and subsequently in Aachen, my research coalesced around urban structure and the way it is produced. Initially this was the due to involvement in a pan-European, multi-disciplinary, project, URBINNO, which examined the economics, demographics, politics and land use in the development process using selected themes and case studies.
Exposure to the German approach and acting as consultant on public transport and urban structure in Bremen focussed my research and by the mid-1990s, I was publishing on types of urban form and their characteristics. Moving to eca reinforced these emphases and my current research reciprocates my main teaching theme concerning the effect of density on layout and how various typologies respond to this.
My PhD students tend to come from the field of urban design, but there is a wide range of interest represented by work on urban structure, urban development, desert settlement and historical evolution.
Recently my interests have included work on the organisational aspects of architectural education and research.
