I see myself as a creative anthropologist, producing work that touches upon, delves into, and 'borrows' from cultures, societies, religious and ritual acts, architectural forms, materials and construction techniques, spanning from mesolithic time to the present day.
I find myself drawn to create work that responds to a space, a land, its geography, its history and its culture, connecting with places I may have visited, explored or remembered.
From functional man-made objects, snow shoes and baskets to architectural structures such as brochs and standing stones, to naturally occurring features of eskers and pingos, these geographical, historic, social and cultural references of objects and architectural oddities act as a catalyst for my ideas. As though recreating symbols and objects of a hybrid imagined village, forgotten society or culture, viewed through the microcosm of a piece or series of works. Speaking to a present day audience, yet echoing a global past.
A sense of space, place and the marking of time.
