This paper was presented at an Expert Meeting, 'The Netherlands - Scotland' on Landscape, Glasgow, March 30.
"The newly acquired insight and a fresh look at one's own practice means that both countries now look differently at the rural reality in both NL and SC"… In Scotland the degree of reflection, the historical understanding and the paradoxical aspects of landscape are naturally accorded in the design process, as Lisa Mackenzie illustrated in her lecture". Jansen, Gilzean and Tombs, pp. 6-7 of the introductory text to the conference proceedings, Panorama NL<>SC Europa.
Significance: This was an invitation-only symposium of academics and practitioners from Scotland and the Netherlands to discuss the future role of landscape policy in both countries. It was organised by Architectuur Lokaal, with the support of the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, The architecture Policy Unit, Scotland, Architectuur Lokaal, Architecture and Design Scotland and the Dutch Embassy in London.
Key Lessons taken from the Event:
1. The need to consider the notion of research by designers a process to inform future policy decisions.
2. The value of space at differing scales and the need to consider using it more efficiently where it is scarce and there are conflicting demands.
3. The need to consider managing change through collective action and agreement, rather than through legislative and statutory mechanisms and
4. The value of context and its appreciation, both in respect of place and time.
