Profile

As a Silversmith I am attempting to explore the transient nature of the environment in a thoughtful and simple way. The activity of taking the recognisable objects of the domestic landscape and redefining their use by altering their value as objects is a key element of my work and offers me an alternative view on my practice. The definition of function has to be challenged and subverted in order to discover new ground and food for creative appetites. Like many designer makers, I consider the relationship between form and function to be an imperative part of this highly disciplined practice. My work tries to capture the essential balance of how the world/nature is? It is the essence of the equilibrium, that place or point where chaos and order collide. It is a moment that is very difficult to touch either spiritually, physically or mentally. My work attempts to explore and capture the fundamental nature of the experience in a very visual and breathtaking way. I'm interested in understanding why that point and place exists and my work explores the essential and ultimately everyday battle of these forces.

Derived from my interest in the sea and the effects of the sea on objects floating in or around it, my work for the viewer is about discovery. I would like the work to have evoked the sense of wonder and surprise that is generated when you set off on a beach combing wander and uncover a sanded, weathered treasure nestled in between the rocks.
