Profile

I specialise in the history of design and consumer culture as well as design and consumption theory and am particularly interested in issues revolving around gender, design and the cultural construction of space. I have published on a diverse range of topics from a narrative history of English garden design to an analysis of hair and beauty salons in the 1920s and 1930s.

I am currently interested in contemporary practices of ‘home-making’ and what impact discourses around climate change are having on attitudes towards the home and domestic products. Within this, I am also interested in the ways in which women are represented as ‘home-makers’ and consumers of domestic products.
