This research is part of a 3-year project supported by an International Collaborative Activity grant of £5,750 from the British Academy to investigate teenagers' experience of urban space and the public realm across communities in Britain and North America. It was initiated in 2004 between the OPENspace research centre at Edinburgh College of Art and researchers at Cornell and University of California, Davis. Travlou is one of four researchers on the project and have led the Edinburgh case studies.
The book's editing has involved a double peer-review process for each chapter. Other chapters include contributions from internationally renowned academics and practitioners such as Terry Hartig, Robin Moore and John Zeisel as well as policy makers such as Ken Worpole and Judy Ling Wong.
