An Turas
Type
Artefact
Location
Isle of Tiree, Inner Hebrides, Scotland
Output Details
A site specific, built artwork commissioned by Tiree Art Enterprises and located at Gott Bay on the Isle of Tiree in the Inner Hebrides, Scotland. A collaborative project with Professor Jake Harvey, Glen Onwin, Sutherland Hussey Architects, and Sandra Kennedy.
This major work evolved collaboratively, exploring the boundary between art and architecture. It is a built, formal distillation of environmental research and represents for me the first research output in direct collaboration with architecture. This has led to further architecture-related invitations, most notably in the design of six large-scale ventilation towers on the extension to Eden Court Theatre, Inverness by Page & Park (under construction) and on completion will represent the largest public art project ever undertaken in the Highlands of Scotland.
An Turas has been critically acclaimed widely as a highly significant and original work through both critical writing and awards. These include: Royal Scottish Academy Gold Medal for Architecture, 2003 RIAS, Best Building in Scotland Award, 2003 RIBA Stirling Prize for Architecture (finalist), 2003 Mies van der Rohe European Award for Architecture (finalist), 2005 Scottish Enterprise, Dynamic Scotland Award, 2003.
One of six works selected for inclusion in the Royal Mail's Modern British Architecture set of postage stamps.
