| overview | progression to year 2 |
Year 1 is the shared first year of each of the fifteen specialist BA (Hons) art and design degrees offered at the College.
The curriculum within Year 1 provides a balanced preparation for all the specialisms offered in Art and Design, enabling students to experience a range of approaches and media within the broad context of art and design practice.
Progressively, students refine their individual interests, abilities and talents in accordance with their chosen specialist degree. If they have chosen to enter via a general Design Studies or FIne Art route, they will identify their strengths and make an informed choice about their preferred area of specialist study. Throughout Year 1, students develop specific and transferable skills which are introduced through studio and workshop practice, lectures, seminars, critiques and study visits.
Conceptual and critical thinking, drawing, making, recording and writing are regarded as key elements in the creation and development of visual ideas. At the College, these intellectual and practical skills are developed through studio and workshop-based projects complemented and underpinned by integrated modules in Professional Practice and Visual Culture.
