information for all applicants
Home/EU applicants
international applicants (non-EU)

In common with other universities in the UK, there are differing levels of fees and financial support arrangements according to your residential status. Please select the appropriate option above.

Cost of Materials
Students are responsible for the costs of their own materials throughout their programme of study. The cost of these will vary between disciplines and applicants are advised to contact the relevant Department via the Academic Registry to discuss the likely expenditure for each year of a programme of study. Applicants should budget for materials in addition to their fees and subsistence, particularly if programmes involving expensive projects or materials are chosen.

Home/EU or International Fees
The UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) provides a guidance note for students which explains the conditions you need to meet to be entitled to pay tuition fees at the ‘home’ rate and not the ‘overseas’ rate for study in Scotland.

If you are a student on course or have applied and been accepted but are unsure if you should be paying Home/EU fees or Overseas fees please complete the Overseas Fees Status enquiry form and return with a copy of your passport to the Academic Registry.

Living Costs
An estimate of the resources needed per week for an academic year of study in Edinburgh are as follows:

Rent for one room, for one student in a shared flat: £90+
Food: £50
Bills (Gas and Electricity): £20
Internet:  £5 - £8
Mobile phone:  £10
Laundry/toiltetries: £8

Total for one week (based on cheapest room):  £183

This estimate is based on basic living costs for a student living in Edinburgh without bringing a family.

Employment
Students may wish to take on part-time work while they study to help with their finances and improve their employability. The College’s employability adviser is available to help students find work and manage employment around their studies.

Hardship Fund, Crisis Loan and Mature Students' Bursary
Under the Government's Hardship Fund Scheme, the College has limited funds with which to assist students who are having particular difficulty in meeting their living costs.

The Students' Union co-ordinates the administration of the Hardship Fund and the College's Crisis Loan with Registry and Finance respectively. The Childcare Fund is administered in conjunction with the Hardship Fund, and is intended to provide assistance towards the cost of formal, registered childcare expenses, and related costs. Further information is available from the Students' Union.

International students may wish to visit the funding and scholarships pages for information on scholarships and bursaries to reduce their College tuition fee, thereby allowing students to allocate this reduction towards their living costs.  Some students may also be eligible for an Independent Learning Account (ILA) which is a scheme set up by the Scottish Executive to help anyone aged 18 or over and living in Scotland pay for courses.

Part-time Study
Please note, special fees arrangements apply for the part-time BA in Combined Studies (Art and Design). As its modules are not centrally funded, applicants may be liable to pay their own fees. For further information on fees and SHARE scholarships which may be available, please contact the Centre for Continuing Studies on +44 (0) 131 221 6111
