Landscape Architecture BA (Hons)/MSc Integrated Masters
Landscape architects design spaces and places. Spaces range from the urban square to the regional landscape. Landscape architects also assess the visual impact of large developments, such as alternative energy projects. Between these scales lie business parks, land reclamation, forestry, streetscapes and urban design. Landscape architects need to understand materials, technology and cultural and natural processes so that they can design functional and sustainable environments, with identity.
Landscape architecture differs from architecture by employing both living (soft) and non-living (hard) materials, and engaging with the natural processes of ecology, geomorphology and hydrology. Like architecture, it has a diverse legacy of precedent, which provides a theoretical context for contemporary design. Like architecture, it is a chartered profession with regulations, which govern responsibilities to the client and the discipline, and set standards for education. Landscape architects can make a difference and change the world for the better. For more information check out I Want to be a Landscape Architect.
Professional accreditation
The BA (Hons) / MSc integrated masters programme is accredited by the Landscape Institute (LI), the professional body representing chartered landscape architects in the UK. It is the equivalent to the Royal Town Planning Institute and the Royal Institute of British Architects, which represent planners and architects. The Landscape Institute's website gives further information on education and careers in landscape architecture. Graduates can become Licentiate members of the Landscape Institute. Having successfully completed the Pathway to Chartership (P2C), they become Chartered Members of the LI (CMLI).
