Intermedia Art* operates within a fine art context and is the area of artistic practice that lies between media. Developments within visual art during the latter quarter of the 20th Century have introduced new processes and situations which have resulted in an expanded notion of artistic practice. The recent legacies of Conceptual Art, Land Art, Installation, Performance, and Video, for example, have resulted in a new context for artistic practice that is no longer based upon mediums but is rather a hybrid of many, creating new contexts and situations.
In the Intermedia Art programme at Edinburgh College of Art students are not required to examine a series of mediums but rather are encouraged to investigate the idiosyncrasies of their own ideas, free from material certainties. It is a belief that the most interesting new work is a product of crossing boundaries between media and conjoining with media outside of established possibilities and canons. Installation, ambient/site specificity, video, sound, and performance all have origins within Intermedia Art.
The Intermedia Art programme at the College emphasises creativity, versatility, and intelligence. The underlying philosophy is rooted in the ever-shifting cultural climate of artistic production. Studio teaching is conducted through a combination of individual and group tutorials and is founded on a belief that art practice is fundamentally a social phenomenon. The aim of the staff and students is to participate in social interaction and discussion through visual art. An identifying quality of the programme is its engagement with visual production beyond the ‘white cube’ gallery context.
