Sculpture at Edinburgh College of Art has an excellent long-standing reputation for encouraging individuality and creativity, and for fostering and working with a wide scope of students' ideas. Our ethos is based on a sound understanding of sculptural values and on practical and intellectual approaches pertinent to contemporaray art practice.
Our students are given a firm grounding in the conceptual and technical processes involved in the making of contemporary sculpture, and can explore a wide variety of ways to realise their personal ideas. In addition to the studio-based practice, professional practice skills, research, drawing, visual thinking and art theory form the main structure of the programme and all programme elements collectively underpin and inform the making of work. A valuable interface exists between the practice and the theory component which is delivered by Visual and Cultural Studies staff and some three-way tutorial discussions between the individual student and staff from Sculpture and Visual and Cultural Studies are an integral part of the programme.
We have a strong visiting lecturer programme of artists and practitioners from alternative disciplines who provide a valuable diversity of input to discussions, tutorials and criticisms. There is a friendly and positive atmosphere among students and staff, and contact takes place on both a formal and informal level.
Each year there are opportunities for a number of students to take up exchanges in Europe, Scandinavia, South Africa and North America. In recent years, arrangements have been formalised with art colleges and universities in Brisbane, Australia; Arizona, Rhode Island and Purchase in the USA; Alberta and Vancouver in Canada; Lucerne and Zurich in Switzerland; as well as Estonia, Poland and Germany.
