The course is designed to prepare our students for a career in photography by encouraging each student to develop their personal vision of the world. This is underpinned by enabling them to develop a deep understanding and knowledge of process and use of specialist equipment. Even a limited study of the art and science of photography quickly reveals the need for specialised ways of looking and seeing.
The programme adopts an eclectic approach to the medium of photography. A great deal of practical experience is required in order to realise fully the medium's potential. At Edinburgh College of Art, technique is seen as a means to an end rather than an end in itself, and the keeping of notebooks is regarded as essential to help you maintain and develop a broad visual vocabulary.
Students explore a wide range of fine art and commercial practice, using traditional photographic hardware as well as the latest computer technologies. In keeping with this holistic philosophy, still image, moving image, and multimedia production are all possibilities within the programme.
