By developing a comprehensive understanding and knowledge of costume design for stage, screen and performance, the costume department provides students with an excellent training across all relevant artforms. It develops the ability to interpret and respond creatively to text, character, movement and music, and supports this with a thorough understanding of materials, cutting techniques, history of costume, illustration, embroidery and textile techniques.
Throughout the department, emphasis is placed on the development of each student's skills in research, criticism, analysis and communication, providing them with the knowledge and professional awareness necessary to pursue a career in costume design. Workshops cover maskmaking, puppetry, millinery and set design.
Visiting lecturers provide expertise in specialised areas, and work placements in theatre, opera, dance, TV and film help our students gain professional awareness.
The Department demands a great deal of commitment from students, who must be talented, hard-working, self-motivated and show a passionate interest in their subject. Our primary aim is to foster and develop each student's individual approach and technique.
