Illustrations are seen in many applied settings, either printed or screen-based, giving the artist an extremely wide choice of subjects and methods. Imagery illuminates all manner of printed ephemera, advertising and design, web design, packaging, postage, periodicals and books. Contemporary practice extends its scope into theatre, the games industry, music, television, museum-related work, web design and exhibitions.
Illustration studies at the College involve significant elements of applied design, fine art, the graphic arts and web design. Illustrators are to create artwork intended for reproduction; thus its end product exists in multiple copies. In professional life art directors, editors and publishers will set briefs that require images to be created for a deadline. In learning and teaching at the Colllege, these factors shape the subject and give it a particular dynamic and momentum.
The Illustration programme reflects these distinctions and supports each student's individual development. We encourage our students to take an inventive approach to image- making and the projects will investigate specific issues relevant to the subject. Through a variety of briefs, students are guided towards imaginative solutions and to a wide exploration of visual language. Tuition in various printmaking processes is given and a grounding in observational drawing is provided. Throughout all teaching there is appropriate reference to the historical development of illustration and its contemporary practice.
