The moving image media are familiar to us all as sources of information, entertainment and inspiration. Film & Television represent a rich and complex field of activity which has both aesthetic and industrial dimensions.
At Edinburgh College of Art we do not focus narrowly on any single element of these media. Our students may work in established formats such as documentary, drama and commercials, or may make experimental films in which the student seeks to define their own creative agenda. However, the programme is founded on the belief that film, television and video-making is essentially a form of storytelling. We encourage our students to be able to define what they are saying, to whom they are saying it, and by what means it is most effectively said.
The programme provides students with a broad spectrum of practical experience, which enables them to use film and video as a means of creative expression. It focuses on education, with training as a subsidiary aim. Many students become very accomplished technically, but this is valued only to the extent that it assists in the creative process. The emphasis is firmly on projects as the means by which learning occurs.
Students on the undergraduate Film & Television programme benefit from exposure to a strong programme of workshops and Masterclasses provided by both the Scottish Documentary Institute, based at Edinburgh College of Art, and Edinburgh Skillset Screen and Media Academy / Screen Academy Scotland, through which the College and Edinburgh Napier University provide postgraduate programmes in Film & Television. Visiting speakers who have appeared in the Scottish Documentary Institute’s schedule have included internationally acclaimed film-makers Nick Broomfield, Nicolas Philibert and Sergei Dvortsevoy. Screen Academy Scotland, meanwhile, has recently scheduled Masterclass events with producer Andrew MacDonald and director Annie Griffin amongst others.
