Mudside Piglet Race

Mudside Piglet Race is a children's story book about six little piglets competing in their primary school trotting race. The main character Charlie races against his five class mates to win a stunning gold trophy and other prizes. The story starts the day before the race when the Mudside Primary School Headmaster Mr Rumply sits the six piglets down and reminds them about the race. Next Charlie features in his home with his family, the morning of the race. The remaining scenes are all based at the site of the race, beginning with the piglets getting ready and doing their warm ups then, the piglets racing. after the race, after the prizes and to the end where all the pigs and piglets have a party in a marquee.

The story was inspired by my learning that in traditional Northern English rural fairs farmers used to put numbers on to the backs of their piglets and race them. After attempting to draw my uncle's extremely energetic piglets which kept running around, I can believe it!I think pig racing may still be practiced, sheep racing with little teddy jockeys does! The following pages show a selection of ten of the twenty eight illustrations from the story.
