This project for the research, conservation and interpretation of the cast collections at the Edinburgh College of Art and the University of Edinburgh was initiated by the Cast Collection Committee under the leadership of Michael Wood, eca Secretary. The present Earl of Elgin and Kincardine is the Patron of the project.
The project will produce a complete catalogue based on research into the intrinsic historical value of the many early and unique casts in the collection and also investigation of its cultural and architectural contribution to the re-invention of Edinburgh as 'Athens of the North.'
The conservation treatment, as well as interpretative materials will ensure that the collection becomes available as a resource for students, scholars, artists and the general public alike.
The project will conclude with a special exhibition documenting the history of the collection, contemporary artistic engagement with the historic casts and the actual research and conservation process. This will mark a new lease of life for a major cultural heritage resource unique to Scotland.
The first phase of a project for the research, conservation and interpretation of the collection is supported by grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund Scotland, Esmeé Fairbairn Foundation and Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland. |
