STONE
STONE

STONE is a three-year AHRC funded project exploring related and interconnected facets of stone carving.

Visits to stone-working locations world-wide will identify a broad range of practice and lineage, and be recorded through film and interview.  At a conference ten artists of cultural diversity will study accumulated research material, and consider new ways of how stone might be reinvigorated in art and the contemporary environment.

In 2009 during the Edinburgh International Festival Milestone, a live stonecarving event and exhibition will occur at Edinburgh College of Art. Ten artists will make new innovative artworks from UK and Irish stone and ten lectures and discussions, led by philosophers, scientists, anthropologists, historians, palaeontologists, archaeologists, and poets.

The research outputs will be achieved through exhibitions, a publication, documentary films, a permanent STONE archive, a website and a successful PhD award.

Principal Investigator: Professor Jake Harvey (Sculptor)

Co-Investigators: Professor Noe Mendelle (Film Maker) and Joel Fisher (Sculptor)
