Future Academy is an international research project, supported by Edinburgh College of Art since 2002 and directed by Dr Clémentine Deliss. Within the College, it integrates students from several Schools on a voluntary basis, developing new ideas with them and disseminating results in high profile events and publications.

Future Academy Studiolab is a joint initiative of Edinburgh College of Art and the University of Edinburgh that was set up in 2005. Within the University of Edinburgh, Studiolab links groups in the College of Science and Engineering, and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Studiolab is directed by Dr Clémentine Deliss, Prof Jon Oberlander and Prof John Lee. Co-ordinators in 2007 were Guy Billings and Steven Mykietyn. 

Future Academy Studiolab is first and foremost an interdisciplinary experiment that seeks to facilitates free-form, rapid research and the development of ideas. As a result, it has generated a Polymathic Research Body with expert input from guest researchers and artists including Iain Boyd-Webb (UK), Nico Docxk, Kris Delacourt and Jan Mast of Building Transmissions and Cryptic Crystal Cloud (B), Bob Fisher (UK), Dave Green (UK), David Hatcher (NZ), Hilary Koob-Sassen (USA/UK), Joseph Masheck (USA), Masato Nakamura (J), Jon Oberlander (UK), Christos Papoulias (GR), Douglas Park (UK), Julius Popp (G), Johannes Raether (G), Oscar Tuazon (USA), and many others.

Outputs of Future Academy Studiolab since 2005 have included:

Exhibitions: ‘Open Operation’, 2006 Edinburgh; ‘Towards a Fictional Academy’, Academy of Fine Arts, Budapest 2006. 

Think tanks: Mori Art Museum Metronome Think Tank, 2007.

Publications: Metronome No. 10 (Oregon), and Metronome No. 11 (Tokyo), both as official participants of documenta 12 magazines in Kassel, Germany, 2007.

Events: St Cecilias Public Lecture series 2005-2007, Edinburgh; ‘Open Hustings’, 2007, Edinburgh; ‘The Living Newspaper’, documenta 12, 2007, Kassel.

In 2007, Future Academy embarked on a new collaboration between Edinburgh College of Art and the National Galleries of Scotland, involving students from the College in the development of Randolph Cliff, an Artist in Residency programme based in Edinburgh.
