The Graduate School provides a highly dynamic and supportive research environment for our large and diverse graduate community.
We accept applications by candidates who wish to study for a research degree (MPhil or PhD) in or across the fields of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (also including Architectural Conservation, History of Architecture, Urban Design and Cultural Studies), Art (including Painting, Sculpture, Intermedia Art, Digital Media, Photography, Printmaking and Video Art, Contemporary Art Theory and Practice, Visual & Cultural Studies, Movement/Dance and Choreography), History of Art, Design (including Animation, Film and Television, Illustration, Graphic Design, Fashion, Textiles, Performance Costume, Interior Design, Product Design, Glass, Jewellery and Silversmithing), and Music (including Composition, Musicology, Organology, Musical Acoustics, Music Informatics, Music Technology, Music and Medicine, and Music Psychology).
Research degrees are based on independent study determined by proposals for research projects submitted by candidates. Such projects can be fully theoretical. However, when appropriate, applicants are encouraged to submit proposals that challenge and expand traditional approaches to research in creative practice and design, via innovative theoretical and/or practice-led methodologies. Candidates can also choose to undertake one of our specialist research degrees (MPhil or PhD by Design, MPhil or PhD in Composition, and PhD in Creative Music Practice).
We also accept applications by candidates who wish to study for an MSc by Research in Architecture, Digital Animation, Digital Media & Culture, Digital Studio Practice, History of Art, Interdisciplinary Creative Practices, Music, Reflective Design Practices and Sound Design.
We welcome applications by candidates with professional qualifications and/or professional experience in all fields, who believe that they would specifically benefit from undertaking MSc, MPhil or PhD research in an environment which specialises in art, architecture, landscape architecture, design, music and history of art.
